About Mark Richardson
Since the early 1980s I have been working with botanic gardens of international renown throughout Australia, Asia and the Middle East. This has involved providing expert advice and assistance on the development of botanical displays and collections including those associated with animal displays. The work has frequently involved developing botanical displays from the start and has often required assisting in the development of interpretation plans and the content for signage, promotional material and audio interpretation. It has included particular experience in the development of collections of indigenous threatened species and desert plants. In addition, I have also had broad experience in assessing the diverse range of issues associated with botanical display management, and have developed a sound knowledge of available management practices and their effective implementation.
Having been the co-founder of the Australian Network for Plant Conservation and the Indonesian Network for Plant Conservation, as well as developing the endangered species collection at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, I have had a wide experience in plant conservation. This experience includes four years as the Director Middle East and Asia for Botanic Gardens Conservation International’s (BGCI) “Investing in Nature” Program being responsible for the management of a very wide range of projects in very different regions. In addition, the experience I have gained in bushland regeneration and management in a diverse range of vegetation communities in both temperate and arid zones, has enabled me to provide expert advice on the successful restoration of indigenous plant communities.
Over the past 20 years, I have been responsible for the facilitation of a wide range of programs and meetings. These have included close involvement in the organisation and running of the first national plant conservation meetings in Australia, Indonesia and India and the first regional botanic gardens meetings in East Asia and for the countries of the Arab League. As the Curator of botanic gardens, Director of an international conservation program and a consultant I have been involved in the initiation, organisation and running of training workshops with regards to plant conservation, the development of plant collections and the management of botanical displays.
All of the advice and assistance that I provide is based on vast experience and sometimes leading positions held in this field.
